*** The End and the Beginning: The Revolutions of 1989 and the Resurgence of History

Date: Monday, November 9 & 10, 2009

Location: University of Maryland, College Park | Woodrow Wilson Center

Address: Stamp Student Union Building, Margret Brent Room, Collage Park

Address: 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC

The Center for the Study of Post-communist Societies and the Romanian Cultural Institute will organize the conference "The End and the Beginning: The Revolutions of 1989 and the Resurgence of History” in collaboration with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, History and Public Policy Program, the Embassy of Romania to United States of America, and Georgetown University´s Edmund Walsh School of Foreign Service. The conference is part of a multi-year project (started in 2007), envisaged by Professor Vladimir Tismăneanu to provide, by means of reflecting on watershed moments of post-1945 history, an overview of the global dynamics characteristic for the 20th century and its lessons and impact upon the 21st. The conference will also be commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The first day of the conference proceedings will take place on the University of Maryland – College Park campus in the Stamp Student Union Building at Margret Brent Room , from 8.30 am until 4 pm. The second day of the conference proceedings will be organized at the Auditorium of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars ( Ronald Reagan Building , One Woodrow Wilson Plaza , 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW , Washington , DC ) from 8.45 am until 5.30 pm.

The organizers of the event aim to create a discussion framework that situates the 1989 phenomena both regionally and globally. Rather than pursuing a case study approach, they wish to achieve an interdisciplinary, multi-angled big-picture of this turning point in contemporary history. The disappearance of the communist regimes in this region and the political experiments ingrained to those years reopened the conversation on the meaning of democracy, liberalism, civil society, egalitarianism, nationalism, and indeed revolution.

The conference will feature renowned scholars, journalists, and policy-makers from Europe and the United States including: Lee H. Hamilton, President & Director, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars; Mircea Mihăieş, Vice-President, Romanian Cultural Institute; Dr. C. D. Mote, President of the University of Maryland; H.E. Adrian Vieriţa, Ambassador of Romania to the U.S.A.; Senator Jim Rosapepe, Former U.S.A. Ambassador to Romania; Gale Stokes, Rice University; Lavinia Stan, St. Francis Xavier University; Jeffrey Isaac, Indiana University in Bloomington; Cătălin Avramescu, University of Bucharest; Ioan T. Morar, Journalist; Vladimir Tismăneanu, University of Maryland; Bogdan Cristian Iacob, Central European University; Iulia Moţoc, New York University; and Emil Hurezeanu, Journalist.

Detailed schedules of the conference including all the speakers are available here: http://www.bsos.umd.edu/GVPT/conference/1989/

*** Book Launch: Dracula is Dead

Date: Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Time: 6:00pm - 8:30pm

Location: Embassy of Romania

Address: 1607 23rd Street, NW, Washington, DC

Ambassador and Mrs. Adrian Vieriţa invite you to the Romanian Embassy to join the former United States ambassador to Romania Jim Rosapepe and his wife, award-winning journalist Sheilah Kast, for the launch of their new book "Dracula is Dead: How Romanians Survived Communism, Ended it, and Emerged Since 1989 as the New Italy." The reception also marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtin. Jim and Sheilah look forward to seeing you and personally signing your copy of the book.

"Dracula is Dead" takes the reader on a tour of an amazing land—beyond Dracula, beyond orphans, beyond Communism, to the vibrant culture, unique history, and 21st Century skills which define modern Romania . You’ll travel to Bucharest, the capital city once called “the Paris of the East,” where centuries old Orthodox Christianity thrives in tandem with cutting-edge IT; to Maramureş in the north, where the Holocaust took a great toll on the once vibrant Jewish community that included Nobel Prize-winner Elie Wiesel; to Transylvania, home not just to Vlad Ţepeş, the real-life Dracula, but to the historic struggles between Romanians and Hungarians, now at peace; and to fascinating spots in-between.

Along the way, you’ll meet people, famous and unknown, who have made Romania—people like King Michael, who in World War II at age twenty-two led a coup to unseat a fascist dictator, only to be forced into exile by the Communists; Ion Iliescu, both a leading figure during Communism and Romania’s first democratically elected president; and Judith Katona, a young woman like many who went abroad to study after the Revolution but returned to create the new Romania.

More than a travelogue or memoir, "Dracula Is Dead: How Romanians Survived Communism, Ended It, and Emerged since 1989 as the New Italy" presents Romania through American eyes, taking you with Jim and Sheilah as they discover a remarkable country of boundless hospitality, brilliant skills, and a bright future in a peaceful Europe. As a strong, creative, charming, democratic nation following years of dictatorship and isolation, Romania really is the new Italy .

About the Authors:

Sheilah Kast is a veteran journalist, well known to viewers of PBS, ABC, and CNN and to listeners of National Public Radio. For ABC, she reported on the collapse of Communism from Moscow and Tbilisi , and covered Hillary Clinton’s first trip to Eastern Europe . He has written about economic and security issues in Europe in The Wall Street Journal, The Baltimore Sun and The Harvard International Review. Location: Kennedy Center

Address: 2700 F Street, NW, Washington, DC

The Romanian Cultural Institute is pleased to present two internationally acclaimed Romanian musicians on an international tour, in a concert that brings the work of the brilliant Romanian composer George Enescu to a worldwide audience. In this program, Enescu´s music is beautifully complemented by two sonatas of Brahms. These two titans of chamber music met in late 19th century Vienna and Brahms became, in his final years, one of the young Enescu´s greatest influences.

Remus Azoiţei - Violin

Romanian-born violinist Remus Azoiţei graduated from the Bucharest Conservatoire, Daniel Podlovski’s class, then studied with Itzhak Perlman and Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School in New York , where he got his Master’s Degree, as well as with Maurice Hasson at the Royal Academy of Music in London . Following his London debut at Wigmore Hall in 2004, the Sunday Express wrote that "he delivered a memorable program in front of a packed Wigmore Hall, and had the crowd cheering. He is one fine musician." Remus Azoiţei has appeared in the Music Festivals of Yokosuka, Cambridge , London , Heidelberg , Paris , Santander , Munich and Bucharest , among many others. In the 2009 “George Enescu” Festival in Bucharest he performed as soloist of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France , conductor Dmitri Kitaenko. In 2007 Remus Azoiţei released together with pianist Eduard Stan the entire repertoire for violin and piano by George Enescu, a world premiere project. Launched by Hanssler Classics on 2 CDs, this collection has immediately attracted international acclaim. Alongside his busy concert schedule, Remus Azoiţei has an active teaching career. He was appointed violin professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2001, becoming the youngest ever violin professor in the history of this institution. He is playing on a 1753 Niccolo Gagliano violin from the Academy Collection.

Eduart Stan – Piano

Pianist Eduard Stan was described as an "enormously sensitive pianist with an extraordinary flexible culture of touch, perfect technique as well as a great understanding of music" by the German Weser-Kurier. After Karl-Heinz Kammerling noticed his talent he went on to study with Arie Vardi at the Academy of Music and Drama in Hanover , where he obtained his Master´s Degree. He later benefitted from the advice of Herbert Blomstedt, Matthias Goerne, Karl Engel, Boris Berman and Paul Badura-Skoda. Eduard Stan has appeared at festivals including Massenet ( France ), Mid-Europe (The Czech Republic), Bourglinster (Luxemburg), Brunswick Classix ( Germany ) and the Festival of Romanian Music ( Romania ) and won top prizes at important international competitions in Cologne , Hamburg and Brunswick .
